What is the service size for ceremonial cacao?

There's an ongoing debate as to how much cacao is too much or not enough.

Many people like to approach cacao and other plant medicines to get high and have an out-of-body experience. Large serving sizes plus additional high octane breath work, and ecstatic dancing has become the norm for what people call cacao ceremonies, what we like to call "cacao raves".

REMEMBER THIS IS "MEDICINE". SMALL SERVES GO A LONG WAY

Now, if you google this you can find references to 30–60 grams, but this is cacao powder they are referring to or chocolate. Both of which are not as strong as 100% cacao. Why does % matter in considering service sizes?

Most "dark chocolate" chocolate out there is 70% cacao and 30% sugar, plus additional cacao butter. As for cacao or coco powder, much that is on the market which is highly processed and has been created through alkalizing agents and high heat temperatures to remove the bitterness.

If you dig a little deeper, you start to realize that suggested serving sizes of even large companies like Lindy 100% Cocoa is only 7.2 grams, which is around 1.6 teaspoons per serve! That is why we recommend 1 tsp from our Dr. Nurse Paula blends made with 100% cacao.
A HABIT OF CONSUMPTION
So why are people being over served? Much can be attributed to the fact we live in a consumerist culture that has trained those in the west that bigger is better, faster is best and when you combine the two, ecstasy is achieved.
In other words, the western world which is aching to heal from its consumption is applying the same methods of consumption to indigenous medicine. This does not create healing, this creates another cycle of abuse towards the plant kingdom, as the trained nature of human over consumption is programmed not to experience subtly once but to consume till everything is destroyed.
ASK YOUR DOCTOR

When in doubt, ask your doctor. As outlined on our website here are some things to keep in mind.

Important Cacao and Health Information

-Heart Rate:

Cacao will naturally raise your heart rate slightly. Please consume accordingly and mindfully.

-Blood Pressure:

Epidemiological studies suggest that cacao reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. Flavanols found in cocoa have shown to support blood pressure reduction.

-Antidepressants:

If you are currently taking SSRI antidepressants and/or anti-psychotics, they might not be compatible with the MAOI's (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors) in cacao. Depending on the dosage, consuming cacao might be OK, as always, if you're taking these types of meds please consult with your doctor.

-Pregnant and nursing women:

In Guatemala, mothers will drink cacao during pregnancy and certainly during lactation. It is regularly utilized due to its numerous health benefits. Please consult your western doctor.

-Other substances:

Raw cacao contains both serotonin and tryptophan which have positive effects on our mood.  Blood flow to the brain is also increased amplifying brain power.

-Caffeine:

The caffeine content of cacao varies widely amongst cacao plants and processing, this cacao has shown a very low, to no-caffeine feel.

-Children:

In moderation and of course smaller doses based on their weight is recommended for children.

-Pets:

Cacao should NOT be consumed by your pets as it can be deadly. Please keep out of reach from your beloved animals.

- Heavy Metals:

While naturally occurring throughout the world the Cacao beans, which are used to make chocolate, can contain trace amounts of lead and cadmium, two heavy metals. The highest concentration of these is in regions of Central and South America. Hawai'i due to the age of its islands has conducted a study showing these metals are only found in small doses on Kauai. Our cacao comes from the Big Island where these heavy metals are not found in any way to sound an alarm. Our cacao has not been tested but we will be sending it in regardless at some point for testing.

I hope this supports you and as always thank you for your support!
